Penrallt House was built in the 1880s, situated on the headland on Aberamffra Road, adjacent to Orielton Park and opposite Orielton Hall. It has a prominent position as you enter Barmouth from Dolgellau and the rear of the house offers incredible views of the Afon Mawddach, the iconic Barmouth Bridge (completed in 1867) and Cader Idris.

Records indicate that George & Emma Lowe moved to Penrallt House in 1893. They were owners of Lowe & Sons (silversmiths & jewellers), with several shops around North Wales, including Barmouth.

Their third child, Harold Lowe, was a keen sailor and left Barmouth in circa 1897 to follow a career in seafaring, eventually rising to the position of fifth officer on the Titanic. As many Barmouth residents will know, Harold Lowe commanded the only lifeboat from the Titanic to look for survivors and a memorial plaque bears his name on the Barmouth quay, from which Penrallt House can be clearly seen.

At some point following World War 1, Penrallt became a hotel (the sign can still just be made out on the western wall) then a hospital in World War 2. In the 1950s the house was converted to four separate two bedroom flats, configured with one on each storey and has remained as such until present day.
